Tom Chasse, CEO of Schweitzer resort and their communications manager, Jennifer Ekstrom, were on my radio show Tuesday, December 17th, and talked about the new Schweitzer Magazine. The question was posed whether the economy would affect the season, but their bookings and numbers are comparable with last year. That's good, 'cuz the last two years were record seasons for the resort. Last season Schweitzer Ski Resort was named as one of Skiing Magazine's Top 25 Ski Resorts, coming off that record year, and is considered by many to be the Pacific Northwest's best ski resort. At the end of the 2008 season, OntheSnow.com voted Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort the Pacific Northwest's Favorite Resort. Finally, in the spring of '08, AskMen.com put the Sandpoint/Schweitzer combo in its list of Top 10 US Resort towns. We think it's the best, and we think you will, too. This morning Jennifer sent out an e-mail dishing the details. Here is what she sent: Schweitzer Snowfall Reaches Half of Average Season Total New Years Day snowfall bumps Schweitzer total to 150 inches, less than one month into season Sandpoint, ID - New Year's Day brought a great gift to Schweitzer's skiers and riders with another storm and 5.5 inches of fresh powder, bringing the season total to 150 inches at Schweitzer. The average annual snowfall is 300 inches. With well over three months still to go in the ski season, and being less than four weeks into it so far, all factors indicate another epic winter. "This snow is just phenomenal for skiing and boarding, whether you like deep powder or nice smooth groomers," said Dave Kulis, Schweitzer's Director of Sales and Marketing. "The huge accumulations of snow have caused challenges for our patrol crews, but they have worked hard to get our steepest bowl terrain open while minimizing risks. The only area left to open is Lakeside Chutes in the Outback Bowl. Guest and employee safety is always our biggest concern, and you can be assured that our open terrain has met the seal of approval from our professional patrol." One hundred fifty inches of snow is far more snow than the resort typically has at this time of year. On New Year's Day last winter, which was widely acclaimed as one of the best ski seasons in recent history, the resort had received almost 20 inches less snow than this year. It is more typical to have about 100 inches at this time.

| What to do |
While skiing is the obvious choice at Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort, there are lots of other things to do. Snowmobiling is great fun, and Priest Lake has what many consider to be the best trails in North America. Another resource for Snowmobiling and other activities is the Selkirk Powder Company. All About Adventures, has Kayaking and Biking. You can ride horses and bikes during other times of year. In the winter, there are lots of music venues in Sandpoint and on the mountain, shopping, and art galleries everywhere. Boating is not suggested in the winter, but many have taken to Lake Kayaking. Of course there is fishing and hunting, depending on season. Last year, many enjoyed months on end of ice fishing. Of course people still ice skate on Sand Creek. Hungry? The saying goes, "Where are the best restaurants in Spokane? Sandpoint!" There is so much more to do, but to see them all, check out our What to Do in North Idaho.
